Japan Embassy Donates USD 84,942 to Support Botswana’s Fight Against Gender-Based Violence

The Embassy of Japan in Botswana has awarded a grant of USD 84,942 to the Botswana Gender Based Violence Prevention and Support Centre (BGBVC). The grant, made through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), will go toward the expansion of BGBVC’s housing shelter to better support survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).

During the signing ceremony, His Excellency Shindo Yusuke, the Ambassador of Japan to Botswana, said gender-based violence remains one of the most pressing challenges shared by both Botswana and Japan. He cited reports indicating that 67% of women in Botswana have experienced some form of GBV, underscoring the urgent need for stronger support systems.

“This grant will assist BGBVC in providing clinical care and safe shelter for victims. The services offered align with our GGP initiative, which supports projects addressing social challenges such as education, healthcare, and human security,” said Ambassador Shindo.

Since 1997, Japan’s GGP program has supported community-level projects in Botswana, including the construction of schools, classrooms for learners with disabilities, and various training institutions.

BGBVC Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Lorato Moalosi, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Embassy of Japan for the continued partnership.

“Our collaboration with Japan has stood the test of time. This grant deepens that relationship and serves as a symbol of hope for a society free from violence,” said Moalosi.

Adding to the sentiments, Ms. Yukiko Fujii from the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), working alongside BGBVC, emphasized the importance of awareness.

“Although gender-based violence is widely discussed, many victims still do not know where to seek help. GBV remains a serious issue that must be addressed with urgency and compassion,” she said.

Ambassador Shindo commended BGBVC for their tireless efforts in offering shelter, counseling, and medical support to victims of GBV and HIV in Botswana. He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote human security and community empowerment.
