From Humble Beginnings to Tailored Dreams: The Rise of Nigel Masona

In the vibrant world of fashion, few stories resonate with the authenticity and grit of Nigel Masona. a young designer whose journey began not in glittering ateliers or prestigious design schools, but through resilience, skill, and a relentless pursuit of purpose.

Nigel Masona completed his Advanced Level education in 2018 with high hopes of entering university. However, like many talented young people across the continent, his dreams were halted by financial difficulties. Where others might have given in to discouragement, Nigel instead chose a different route: self-empowerment through skills training. In 2019, he enrolled in a Cutting and Designing program at the Young Africa Skill Centre in Zimbabwe, laying the foundation for what would become a promising career in fashion design.

Then came 2020, a year that altered the world’s rhythm with the onset of COVID-19. It was also the year Nigel moved to Botswana, a leap of faith that would shape the next chapter of his life. He began working with his uncle at Pop Inn Mall, where they adapted to the times by specialising in mask production. It wasn’t glamorous work, but it was necessary, and it gave Nigel the hands-on experience and exposure he needed to understand not just the craft of tailoring, but the dynamics of demand and supply in a crisis-driven market.

Soon after, Nigel’s journey led him to BBS, where he joined Devine Seasons Apparel. Here, he specialised in making medical scrubs for nurses, a vital contribution during the pandemic and a testament to his ability to pivot and meet the needs of the moment. This period further sharpened his skills in precision, functionality, and large-scale production.

In 2022, a new opportunity came knocking. Nigel was employed at Keno Suits, where he immersed himself in the art of formal menswear. After completing his contract, he joined Les Wears in Mogoditshane, once again focusing on suits. It was during this time that Nigel honed his understanding of structure, fit, and elegance, key components of bespoke tailoring.

But mid-2023 marked a bold turning point. Armed with experience, growing confidence, and a reputation for quality craftsmanship, Nigel decided it was time to launch his own venture. What followed was a whirlwind of growth. “It didn’t take time for me to have many clients because of the amazing work that I was doing,” Nigel reflects. His designs spoke for themselves, clean lines, meticulous finishes, and a passion that radiated from every stitch.

Today, Nigel Masona is not only an independent designer; he is a symbol of what determination and raw talent can achieve. He designs everything from school uniforms and formal menswear to contemporary ladies’ wear. Yet, it is in women’s fashion that he finds his true passion. “I like doing ladies’ wear more than men’s wear because I like challenging stuff,” he says with a gleam of ambition in his eyes. For Nigel, designing for women pushes him to experiment, evolve, and innovate, traits that any great designer must master.

As he continues to build his brand and clientele, Nigel now sets his sights on a larger stage. This October, he looks forward to participating in the prestigious Fashion Without Borders showcase, an international platform known for spotlighting emerging designers across Southern Africa. It is a milestone he eagerly anticipates, knowing it could open doors for the world to see the depth of his talent.

Nigel Masona’s story is one of perseverance against the odds. From a youth without the means to attend university to a sought-after designer creating custom pieces that turn heads and tell stories, his journey reminds us that success isn’t always born in lecture halls, it’s often stitched in sweat, courage, and a refusal to give up.

As the spotlight beckons and his designs inch closer to international recognition, one thing is certain: Nigel Masona is just getting started. And the world better be ready.
