From the heart of Mochudi Boseja comes a rising star whose voice carries the soul of a generation. Keineetse Mpho Nthompe, known on stage as Mpho Kagiso, is a proud female R&B artist reshaping the soundscape of Botswana’s music scene. Her music, a fusion of old-school rhythm and blues, modern R&B, and distinctive Botswana vibes, has become a healing space for those who listen, a diary turned into melody.
“I define my sound as R&B,” she shares, “but it’s more than that. It’s a blend of soulful nostalgia and modern edge, all wrapped in the essence of who I am as a Motswana woman.” Her music pulls from life’s rawest moments, love, heartbreak, joy, pain, and everything in between. “My sound is inspired by real-life situations. I’ve been through things, and I sing my truth.”
Growing up on a steady diet of hip-hop and classic R&B, Mpho Kagiso found her creative voice early on. It was this foundation that molded her sound, rich, emotionally layered, and deeply connected to her Tswana identity. “My voice has local touches to make it special. I want the world to hear Botswana when I sing.”
One of her most personal songs to date is “You, featuring Rashiida T. “It’s about a hard breakup that left me low, but it’s also about finding love and hope again. I wrote it for women, to make them feel strong. I want my fans to feel seen and empowered.”
Mpho’s songwriting process starts with melodies. “Once I have the melody, the verses follow. That’s when the song comes to life.” Her music is honest, blending modern trends with authentic storytelling. Whether it’s an R&B ballad or a Motswako-driven track, Mpho always stays true to her roots.
Her commitment to preserving and celebrating Tswana culture is central to her artistry. “My identity as a Motswana woman is everything. Through my music, international audiences learn about who we are. That’s powerful.” She adds, “Motswako has a special place in my heart because it’s real. It tells our stories, it heals.”
Mpho Kagiso also recognizes her role as a voice for women in a male-dominated genre. “I feel responsible to represent women in the Motswako scene. I use my voice to speak for the voiceless and give hope to the hopeless. I’ve had tough times too, and I want my music to inspire.”
Her journey hasn’t been without challenges, especially with event bookings, but she remains grounded and focused. “I stay real and honest in my music. That’s how I cope.”
One of her proudest career moments was performing at the remembrance of the late Dramaboy. Sharing the stage with icons like Katlego Ramphileng, Han-C, Dada Kavino, and Licky was a moment she will never forget. “It was an honor. May Dramaboy’s soul rest in peace.”
She’s also had the chance to be featured on Mokaragana TV and interviewed on RB1 and UB Radio, milestones that brought her closer to the dream. “Those were dream-come-true moments for me.”
Looking ahead, Mpho is gearing up for big things. She’s working on a new EP with Sho Chovela, set to drop in September, and already has her debut album in the pipeline for next year. Fans can also expect more collaborations that blend genres, she’s explored everything from gospel to house and afro sounds.
As for her dream collaborations, she has her sights set on Botswana’s own Samantha Mogwe and South Africa’s Fifi Cooper. “Samantha lifts women up with her music, just like I hope to do.”
When she’s not recording or writing, Mpho spends time reading, meditating, and going to church. Her spirituality and solitude feed her creativity and keep her grounded.
Beyond the music, she dreams of starting an organization that supports up-and-coming artists and gives back to the elderly and those in need through donations. “I want to use my platform to help others grow.”
Her message to aspiring artists is one of hope and perseverance: “Music is passion, do it with love. Don’t let negativity stop you. There will be ups and downs, but have faith. One day, you’ll make it to the top.”
In every note she sings, Mpho Kagiso carries not just her own story, but the spirit of a people. And if her journey so far is anything to go by, her voice will echo far beyond the borders of Botswana.
